Senior Writer

Gauge (gauge.ai) is looking for a Senior Writer. This is a contract-based, fully-remote position. If your background is in journalism, research, analysis or cultural criticism, this could be for you.

Gauge is a cultural insights agency working with some of the country’s top brands and non-profits: Sephora, Pinterest, Paramount, and so many more. Our clients turn to us to understand how to meaningfully engage across communities, building programs, products and messages that win hearts, minds and market share.

As Senior Writer, your job will be to deliver this understanding. This includes developing research plans, analyzing survey results, and writing final reports. For examples of our previous work, click here. Here’s how it works:

  • First, you’ll be assigned a project that works for your schedule and ideally aligns with an area of interest/ expertise.
  • Once you’ve been briefed (this could include participating in calls with clients), you’ll be asked to write a research plan. That could include survey questions, an interview guide, or both. At this stage, you’ll need to be really good at getting to the heart of the matter – structuring questions that will elicit specifics and new insights.
  • We’ll give feedback, then the research will field.
  • Once results are in, you’ll receive all the raw materials you need to start to weave together analysis. This could include survey results, interview transcripts or data. Your job then is to begin to weave together quotes and data until you have a compelling story that directly addresses the research questions at hand.
  • Along the way, you’ll work closely with the lead on the project, who will provide feedback and guidance on the specific client, their preferences, and any additional broader context.
  • Once you have a draft, your project lead will review and provide feedback (Expect LOTS of feedback – we have a very specific style. If feedback isn’t your thing, this probably isn’t the right fit!).
  • You’ll then be asked to revise until we have a draft that’s ready for design and delivery.
  • In some cases, you’ll be invited to participate in client calls to debrief the insights delivered.

Must-have skills:

  • Quick, clear writing – detailed but jargon-free
  • Knack for nuance
  • Eye for ‘aha’ moments, and ability to communicate them crisply
  • Ability to spot and clearly articulate opportunities and watch-outs, including subtle cultural nuances
  • Enthusiasm for feedback
  • Experience with data journalism is a plus but not required
  • Experience in diversity and inclusion also a major plus
  • Commitment to kindness, innovation, impact and inclusion

How to Apply

  • Send a resume and writing sample to [email protected]
  • In the body of the email, include a brief note outlining your experience and interest in the role. Here’s your first chance to show us how clearly and concisely you can write : )

From there, if you seem like a potential good fit, you’ll hear from us on a paid, sample project.
